James designed and oversaw a 2010 renovation of a small wing of our single family house–three rooms on two floors–and the upgrading of our HVAC system. He has over twenty-five years of experience in residential, commercial, historic, and institutional design, including LEED and green building consulting. He focused on energy efficiency, but at the same time did exquisite architectural design and managed all aspects of the project.

Complex attic air sealing and insulation 2024 project — enhancement of insulation work done 30 years ago. I’d had a previous false start with a prominent MassSave contractor who (erroneously) said it didn’t qualify for rebates and they couldn’t handle it. M&W scoped the job and then referred me to MassSave for rebate arrangements. Quality of work was superb — expertise and attention to detail of crew was impressive. They were a pleasure to have around the house as well. Entire process went smoothly — consistently good communications and easy mastery of all the issues I raised. Final charge matched contract estimate, work may have exceeded scope somewhat.

NEEECO was referred to us through MassSave. The first step was to conduct the required MassSave energy assessment of our home. The energy specialist did the assessment and provided us with an initial proposal for insulation and other energy efficiency treatments required for future work (heat pump installations, etc.). The specialist provided us with a list of resources and forms to be completed for access to the rebates available for the energy efficiency upgrade. The specialist also explained what we needed to do to prepare for the insulation project. Other representatives from NEEECO contacted us to inform us of the next steps in submitting paperwork.

The insulation work was done mid-January, 2024. The crew encountered a few problems with access to our home – no parking in front of our house and narrow drive-way – but they were able to quickly figure out a work-around. Insulation was pumped into our exterior walls and in the floor of our attic. In addition, the crew installed a mushroom roof air vent for proper air flow and insulated our door to the attic. The work was completed on time. The crew was respectful of our property and did a thorough cleanup. The final cost was less than the estimate based on conditions encountered during the installation.

By its nature, pumping in insulation is a disruptive and noisy job. It’s best to find another place to be during the day and to arrange to stay overnight somewhere else.

We had them insulate our 1910s triple decker in 2023. They were terrific! With MassSave the service was entirely free.

They have the best selection in the area of induction ranges, including two 48″ ranges which is what we needed to replace our previous gas unit without having to redesign the kitchen cabinetry. Smooth sales process just note that delivery is subcontracted and is really just delivery, not installation. They can handle a plumber for gas shut off but you have to do the electrical upgrades, if needed, separately.

I bought a Bosch induction cooktop-range combo. I have always cooked with gas and have been completely happy with cooking on the induction cooktop. It is fast, as fast as gas – I have not timed it, but I don’t notice anything different time-wise. It has a speed boost that is super fast. Temps go from 0-10 by halves (designated by a dot: . ) – a very nice feature not found on all such.
The top is a single piece of smooth glass/ceramic and an absolute cinch to clean compared to anything else (multiple gas burners, for example). It also looks very modern and slick.
The one thing I wish were different is the ‘burner’ arrangement – it seems a slight re-arrangement would be more functional, but that’s pretty minor and varies from maker to maker.
Note: they only work with pots and pans to which a magnet sticks.

We purchased a Bosch induction cooktop from Yale Appliances and had it installed by them (including capping off the gas). This was done in a very timely manner. Prior to installation, we hired an electrician to add a circuit breaker with a higher amp rating in the electric panel and a higher voltage outlet for the induction cooktop. He also ran a new electric line from the circuit breaker to the stove. The electrical work cost more than we expected. Also, we failed to get the $500 Mass Save rebate because we didn’t have a Mass Save home energy audit within the past year.

Elephant Energy helped us plan installation of 6 air source heat pumps and a heat pump water heater in our home.
Elephant knows about and explains the rebates available from the Commonwealth of MA along with federal tax deductions. They helped us navigate the process to secure a MA no-interest heat loan. After a home visit by two engineers. The engineers explored potential approaches and our preferences. Elephant Energy provided us with a user friendly and informative proposal which was responsive to our needs. Elephant provided us with a dedicated project manager/engineer to coordinate the job. The project manager came on-site, kept us informed throughout the project and provided advice on decisions that needed to be made through out the job. Elephant partnered with Newton-based Forge for the installation. Forge has an interesting model – expert installers with years of experience, do the installation. Forge also trains apprentices, which helps to provide jobs to young people, expanding the pool of labor to support electrification. The crew was friendly and responsive to our needs. We enjoyed having them in our home.
Our 1935 single family home with its brick exterior provided some challenges and Elephant met the challenges. The final cost met the estimate Elephant provided. Finally, Elephant “trained” us on how to use the heat pumps and was available for questions after the installation was complete.

The Brookline wire inspector is requiring us to upgrade our electric service to 200 Amps. Elephant told us that might be a possibility. The electrician that works with Elephant will do the job. That job has not been completed yet.

They provided a quote for a heat pump water heater in my single-family home, managed the permitting and installation (including electrical and plumbing) and rebates. They are very knowledgeable and pleasant to work with. They also provided a quote for air source heat pumps to heat/cool my home, but I decided not to pursue that project now – but if I do in the future, I will likely hire them to do it.

I have a SanCO2 split system heat pump water heater, with the tank inside and the condenser outside. They were one of the few contractors willing to install and stand behind their work. Mario and crew are knowledgeable and did a great installation. I went with the unit he recommended since he has been installing these and presumably knows which are the most trouble-free. It was hard-to-impossible to do much consumer research into quality and rebates/incentives because of the multiplicity of brand names: big box stores (H. Depot) carry the same brand under a different name and sub-name than plumbing supply houses, etc. I think my unit is a little inconsistent in temp day to day but even that is hard to determine. Overall, I’m very happy with it; it is an AO Smith Voltex® Hybrid Electric Heat Pump 50-Gallon Tank Water Heater – it is more than sufficient for 2 consecutive showers.

We had heat pumps–two condensers and 7 heads units–installed in May of 2023. Overall, this company did good work at a reasonable price and on budget. The work was done over the course of a week and on time, and the workers were very considerate and tidy. There were a couple of adjustments needed on two of the heads afterward, which fixed the problem. We had one other minor issue (involving settings on the remotes), which the service department promptly resolved. Getting the paperwork filed for the rebate was slow (I suggest following up), but we ultimately got our rebate check about 4 months after the work was done.

CUI installed heat pumps for heating and cooling in my condo undergoing renovation (2021). They really knew their stuff, offered different options, reviewed the installation and locations of various pieces of equipment. They advised that since I was not gutting the whole place and was therefore not able to do modern air-sealing and insulation, I should keep some of my old steam radiators for a winter to be sure the system could handle the temps – this was excellent advice even though I did not need them. Cost estimate was good, schedule was good, they were great to work with. They are on top of the rebates/incentives and filed the paperwork and kept track.  One of the keys to this work is the location of equipment, especially the exterior condensers: be sure that whoever you work with discusses this in detail.

My gas furnace broke in the winter (November, 2023). They came out promptly. They recommended a dual fuel system (as did most other vendors), in part (I believe) because of limited electric capacity in my condo. They knew about rebates and, after their staff person returned from being out sick, were prompt about filing it. They were timely and communicated well about when they would arrive. The bill was what they had said, but the rebate was somewhat less than they had initially led me to believe.

They provided us with an air source heat pump retrofit to replace our traditional central air condenser and allow us to move off of our gas powered steam boiler. We spoke to a few different contractors, and this was the only one that offered Bosch heat pumps, which are the same shape as a typical ac condenser, and have a single unit up to 5 ton, which means they are the most straightforward retrofit. Green Energy also added an electrical resistance heat pad for the coldest days so that we did not have to pay for a lot of extra capacity for a few days per year. Their prices were very good, they were very responsive, they had their own electrician when we needed to extend the electrical to the new heat pump location, and they helped us with the rebates. We were faced with an emergency situation– the furnace in our single family home died in the middle of January 2024. Based on info that we had previously learned, and advice from two contractors, we decided to install a heat pump tied to an efficient gas furnace for backup heat. HomeServe had been our maintenance contractor for many years and had always been very responsive–and we went with their proposal and are happy with the results. The work was done in a timely manner, with few call backs; and their system made it easy to apply for rebates. (We had already had a MassSave audit, so pre-approved). The system is programmed to go to back up heat when the outdoor temp drops below 30degF. We’ve spent very little time on backup heat. It also helped that we had insulation and air-sealing done in previous years.

I heat my house with oil and have 2 zones, one for the living area and the other for the bedroom area. There are no ducts but the living area is open so it made the most sense to put an air exchange heat pump in the living area and leave the bedrooms on oil, rather than installing ducts to heat all rooms.  The project was done in 2023. There was no mention of rebates by them. I would love to know if there are any. They are very easy to work with. My project was delayed due to illness of multiple members of their team but only by a week. The final cost was the same as the estimate. He replaced the meter box at the exterior, replaced the panels with new ones, added the public meter and panel, and ran power for two car chargers to my garage 70′ away, etc. I had them prep the electrical panels for future solar panels. Six months later as part of a renovation project, they wired an induction cooktop, heat pumps and heat pump hot water heater. He and his crew are great to work with, have great communication, did everything on time and within their reasonable cost estimate. I’m not sure if they were familiar with rebates and other incentives; I had researched them myself. Seamus is a great electrician who has reasonable pricing. As with most electricians, Seamus may not be aware of best EV charging hardware or power-sharing options, so it’s worth having that conversation in parallel with an EV charging expert or experienced EV driver. For example, you do not necessarily need 32A/240V, and if that puts you over code for your panel or service, there are a number of options Seamus and other electricians likely won’t tell you about, simply because they’re not used to helping with that aspect. They are used to starting with a product you want to install and looking at the specs and installing it in a conventional way.

Ace seems to be growing and does business throughout MA. I used them in 2023 for rooftop solar at a Wellfleet house. Very responsive personnel, who did a good job keeping me updated and answering questions. They submitted a competitive bid. I used Energy Sage marketplace for help getting bids and researching various topics. Energy Sage highly ranked Ace as a contractor.

I used this solar marketplace to collect some quotes on a rooftop solar project. It was a great source not only for collecting quotes but for seeing reviews of the installers, ratings of the equipment specified in the quotes, and finding relevant technical assistance (ES staff and ES articles of relevance, e.g., how much power used annually for EV charging). The only limitation I identified in using ES for this project is that I didn’t get a quote from an installer ES rated highly. I got a quote on my own, and the agent for that installer opined that ES hadn’t prompted it to submit a bid because the installer had already hit its weekly ceiling for bids per its contract with ES. I share this experience, but IMO it is an early resource homeowners should check out if they are considering rooftop solar.

They contracted with Team Sunshine in Hudson MA to perform the install which went seamlessly and on time. The process was transparent and there were no unexpected problems. With Shawn I was able to negotiate around solar panels and system size. The price provided at the outset was the final price paid. Team Sunshine was responsive and accessible. We are fortunate that the interconnect permit was granted quickly as I understand there have been some long delays. Overall, I am happy with the installation process and would recommend this organization. I would note we priced a few other systems and this one provided the best quality panels at lowest price (as opposed to other more integrated systems which have fewer interconnected parts but cost more).

Initial consultation gave us the most confidence out of all the providers we got estimates from, however they did lead us to believe we could put panels on both parts of our roof (we had a flat, rubber roof portion and a pitched, shingled roof) and in practice that ended up not being the case. That said the work got done on time and we have been successfully getting quite a bit of electricity (more than the initial estimate) for several years now. The project was done in 2020.

My neighbor and I solicited solar panel electric systems from EnergySage (an aggregator) and Sunbug (now ReVision). We were very particular about the panel layout, desiring the most aesthetic layout possible (all oriented in same direction and aligning, for example), even if that meant having fewer panels than the maximum that would fit. Sunbug was easiest to work with on this and provided the most timely response to all the back and forth. Sunbug seemed the most on top of current requirements being adopted one by one by municipalities such as requiring a 3′ firefighter clear path to and along the roof ridge. They explained the specific quirks of putting solar panels on a 2-unit condo. Their pricing was similar enough to the others that we went with them because of the confidence fostered by all the direct interaction. Work is scheduled for March 2024.
